Describing his efforts to find a publisher for her manuscript, Miriam Sedley; noting that the publishers think she should publish it "piecemeal in a Magazine"; telling her that he asked about publishing the manuscript in Fraser's magazine but awaits her permission to give Fraser's the manuscript to preview; giving Jane Welsh Carlyle's opinions on how she could improve the manuscript; mentioning that he doesn't think much money can be made from the manuscript; suggesting that perhaps her ex-husband, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, could be persuaded to increase her meager allowance.

Expressing delight at Ruskin's offer to "bring out a small volume on Carlyle but indicating that he prefers "not to attempt to describe (directly) C[arlyle]'s character. I preferred to let it appear in the story and in his own clear letters; describing Carlyle as "not selfish, not consciously or deliberately selfish, not selfish at all in the ordinary sense but he required everything to be sacrificed to his convenience. He was intensely occupied with his work & with 'the message' which he had to deliver--He never considered those he lived with in the small things of every day life. Where they had worked & slaved for him he was really grateful, but he was too shy--or too something to show it--Domestic life is a give and take and with him it was all take;" referring to "her [Jane Welsh Carlyle] life was a tragedy[.]....She admired him, & reverenced him and would have loved him if she could....For me she had some unaccountable regard, and it was for this reason I believe that C[arlyle] left her to me as a legacy which he would not trust to any of his own family[.]"

Explaining that he has not written sooner because he has been consumed with the composition of "a book I am making haste to finish" [A System of Logic]; saying "As for me I should by this time have been as dry as a botanical specimen[,] every drop of moisture in my composition having been absorbed by the driest logic & metaphysics" if it had not been for the elections to remind him that "one is walking about among individual human beings & not among Universal Affirmative or Negative Propositions"; discussing Whigs and Tories, saying, "for my part I believe Opposition is the natural position for liberalism, & that, except for short periods, it never thrives well anywhere else"; with mention of the Carlyles.

The Thomas Carlyle Collection consists of of material by and about Thomas Carlyle. Material includes writings, notes, maps, and correspondence that document Carlyle's research on German history and literature and on Oliver Cromwell, among other topics. The bulk of the papers relate to Carlyle's History of Friedrich II of Prussia, called Frederick the Great and include maps, research notes, correspondence, drafts, and corrected proofs. There is also a substantial amount of material related to Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches, including an annotated three-volume set of the printed work that was used to prepare a revised edition, and several folders of contributions by various correspondents. Other papers include drafts of essays and a book-length work on the history of German literature, letters to and from Carlyle about diverse aspects of his life and work, and photographs of Carlyle and his wife Jane Welsh Carlyle. Of particular interest are holograph drafts of Past and Present and fragments of Chartism (a pamphlet published in 1839).

Fragment of a letter : London, to John Ruskin, [1883] Nov. 12.
Discussing his work on the letters and memorials [of Jane Welsh Carlyle] and his continuing work on "his [Carlyle] own letters and journals of the same period; a Rembrandt portrait forms itself exquisitely noble--yet this more and more is impressed upon me that he had not naturally a robust constitution of character. Instead of quiet strength he had passion--generous through every emotion of it, but still passion--and running out of control at every turn. His strength was moral, the moral determination to do right and speak truth which governed his general thought & general action with a completeness unparalleled in our days--but left him open to impatiences and irritabilities,..... in a way that was terribly trying."
