Chaloner, John Armstrong, 1862-1935. Papers, 1862-1935.

Business and personal correspondence, legal briefs, literary manuscripts, and miscellaneous papers. The letters, about half of the collection, are concerned with Chaloner's attempts to have himself declared sane after a brief internment in Bloomingdale Asylum at White Plains, N.Y., by his family because of his excessive interest in spiritualism; efforts to obtain possession of his estate; verdicts from psychologists concerning his mental condition; the fostering of motion pictures for rural areas; the circulation of some of his poems on European politics prior to 1914; and congratulations to Chaloner on obtaining a favorable verdict regarding his sanity in the U.S. Supreme Court. The literary manuscripts are generally confined to treatises on the lunacy laws of various states. The briefs and legal notes are concerned with trials and appeals against the state of New York, and against the Washington Post for slander. Included also are canceled checks; telegrams; invitations and clippings, the latter largely confined to the career of his divorced wife, Amélie Rives, who later married Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy, and to the comment caused by the popular phrase coined by Chaloner: "Who's looney now?" Among the correspondents are Philip Alexander Bruce, Richard Evelyn Byrd, J.H. Choate, Walter Duranty, A.C. Gordon, Joseph Jastrow, Claude Kitchin, Lee Slater Overman, and W.L. Phelps.

Among the manuscripts are twenty-two notebooks containing holograph notes and drafts of chapters. The printed material consists of one copy of THE STREAM OF HISTORY, 1934 edition.

Series of commentaries which Duranty used in his book I WRITE AS I PLEASE, 1935. His first observations, from ca. 1919, were made while in Riga where he was on assignment from the New York Times. Topics and people include Bolshevism; the American anti-Red scare; Red Cross involvement in the Baltics; the rise of Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin; Isadora Duncan; William Bolitho; American relief administration; Maxim Litvinov; and Erich Ludendorff. A lengthy section describes how Duranty lost a leg in a train accident in Paris and then his personal reflections on Russia.

This collection contains materials that relate to Ralph W. Barnes’ fourteen year career as a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. Barnes reported in Europe from 1926 to 1940, and was stationed in Benito Mussolini’s Italy, Joseph Stalin’s Russia, and Adolf Hitler’s Germany. The collection includes items related to Barnes’ career as well as his personal life. Correspondence, journals, and scrapbooks created by his wife, Esther Barnes are also included. The majority of Barnes’ published stories are documented in scrapbooks created by his father, E.T. Barnes. A notable item in this collection is a letter from Joseph Stalin to Barnes, written in 1933.

Correspondence, clippings, notebooks, and photographs. The principal files are not complete. The correspondence covers the years 1920 to 1941, and the scrapbooks of clippings begin in 1927 and end in 1945. Nevertheless, many of Knickerbocker's reports, cables, and interviews, some unpublished, are present and provide information concerning news events, primarily in Europe, and the operations of his office. Correspondence with fellow members of the press is extensive and interesting. There are a few original manuscripts in the collection, but none pertain to Knickerbocker's seven books. Also, photographs relating to Knickerbocker's works on Russian trade and the Five Year Plan, and of Knickerbocker himself. The correspondence includes letters from Winston Churchill, Randolph Churchill, Evelyn Waugh, Leon Trotsky, Sir Josiah Stamp, Ernestine Evans, Walter Duranty, and John W. Wheeler-Bennett.
