Epithet: LLD, Keeper of Printed Books British Museum
English librarian.
Librarian of the British Museum.
Author and museum employee.
Richard Garnett was the keeper of printed books in the British Museum. He also wrote biographies of Milton, Carlyle, Emerson, and Coleridge, as well as several volumes of original and translated verse.
Richard Garnett (1835-1906) was an English librarian and author. Edmund Gosse (1849-1928) was an English poet and critic.
Richard Garnett (1835–1906) worked at the British Museum for 50 years, and became Keeper of Printed Books; he was the author of many biographies, histories of Italian and English literature, verse translations of European poetry, and a poet in his own right.
His son, Edward (1868–1937), was a publisher's editor for over 50 years. He recognized the literary talents of such authors as Stephen Crane, Robert Frost, Sinclair Lewis and Ernest Hemingway, and was able to get their work published in England. Edward Garnett was also the friend and advisor of such writers as Joseph Conrad, W.H. Hudson, John Galsworthy, D.H. Lawrence, W.H. Davies, and T.E. Lawrence.
David Garnett (1892–1981), Edward's son, became an author and wrote eleven novels as well as his autobiography; he edited the letters of T.E. Lawrence and the novels of Thomas Love Peacock. He and Francis Birrell started a bookshop; he helped found the Nonesuch Press and the publishing firm of Rupert Hart-Davis.

Garnett Collection, 1882-1966, 1891-1928
Title:
Garnett Collection 1882-1966 1891-1928
The Garnett collection of correspondence spans three generations of the Garnett family, consisting of more than 700 pages of correspondence written to Richard (1835–1906), his son Edward (1868–1937), and Edward's son David (1892–1981). Authors of these letters include H.E. Bates, E.M. Forster, Leslie Stephen, Richard Curle, Liam O'Flaherty, Henry Williamson and H.G. Wells. Although the collection of correspondence spans nearly eight decades, from 1882 to 1966, the bulk of the letters were written between 1891 and 1928.

John Lane Company. Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.

The records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933, are comprised mainly of incoming correspondence. Also present are manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, notes, documents, and autobiographical materials of John Lane. In addition, there are readers' reports prepared for manuscripts submitted to the firm between 1894 and 1930. The reports are a valuable source of information on the firm's publishing guidelines and on the kinds of manuscripts submitted during that period.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

The text printed in great part in his Anecdotes edited by S.W. Singer, 1820. Note by Richard Garnett suggests, improbably (see Joseph Spence by A. Wright, 1850), that the copy may have been made for the Rev. William Beloe; it was given by Spence's executors to the Duke of Newcastle, 1771, and was given to Garnett by Una Fradelle, 1893.
