Letter to Major General Stephen Van Rensselaer requesting that Van Rensselaer consider him for appointment as the county clerk of Otsego County, N.Y. Morris states that he had served as the clerk of the county, but was removed due to his political preference. He asks Van Rensselaer to use his influence to secure the position for him once again. Morris also alludes to Van Rensselaer's recent battle at Queenston. He states that despite the poor position Van Rensselaer was placed in, he still supports him. Written at Butternut, N.Y.

Papers, 1728-1893 (bulk ca. 1784 - ca. 1826). They include correspondence, bonds, indentures, bills of sale (including some for ships), vouchers, receipts, powers of attorney, other legal and financial papers, and a few miscellaneous pieces of printed ephemera, such as prices current at Livorno and New Orleans, and a blank form for a bill of exchange. Most of the material consists of letters from merchants and business associates in New York City, Philadelphia, and elsewhere, about the settlement of accounts, trade, land speculation, introductions, and personal matters. Individual correspondents include Samuel Ogden and other members of the Ogden family; Peter Collins; Nicholas and Henry Cruger; Josiah Hardy and James Rivington, Jr.; John Wilcocks; and Thomas Lawrence and Jacob Morris. Subjects include Low's mercantile activities, especially the import of Madeira wine; his purchases of land in upstate New York and Canada, some in partnership with Samuel Ogden; the closing of the firm of Lawrence & Morris; and occasional references to politics and personal affairs. A 1788 letter from Peter Collins alludes to Low's work as a member of the state constitutional convention. A letter from Samuel Ogden discusses financial issues arising from his use of the labor of slaves belonging to Low's brother Isaac. A letter from John Smithson to a correspondent named Irwin, written in 1807, includes a detailed discussion of how to deal with having had a vessel seized, apparently passing on advice from Low's business partner Wallace. Personal material includes a letter from his daughter, Henrietta Low, and some invoices for her schooling and other expenses. Later material includes letters, telegrams, and miscellaneous papers, some pertaining to Augustus Fleming, others members of the Beekman family.

Title: Jacob Morris papers, 1789-1916.

Correspondence and papers, 1789-1916, of Jacob Morris and other members of his family. Letters to Jacob Morris during the 1790s, when he was a state legislator, discuss politics; other letters, dating from the early nineteenth century, are mainly concerned with business related to his landholdings in Otsego County (N.Y.). The collection includes deeds, mortgages, surveys, and a tax assessment roll for Butternuts (N.Y.), ca. 1824. Other papers relate to his son, Richard Morris, and include an invitation to Richard Morris to act as pallbearer at James Fenimore Cooper's funeral. Much of the other material relates to Richard Morris's daughter, Euphemia; her husbands, Augustus N. Saltus, August Vence, and John Albert Machado; and her children, Richard Morris Saltus, Anna Lloyd Saltus, and Lewis Morris Johnston Machado. Some family letters discussing her divorce from August Vence are included. John A. Machado's papers include business letters, a few in Portuguese, discussing his trade with other U.S. cities and the West Indies in the 1850s. The collection also contains papers dealing with the Fenno, Upton, and Johnston families. As well as correspondence and papers relating to landholdings, the collection contains legal papers related to litigation about family wills, including the will of Francis Upton, father of Richard Morris's wife Frances Mary; certificates of baptisms, confirmation and marriage; a Portuguese passport; and miscellaneous printed ephemera.
