Huntington and related family papers. Sub-group II consists of papers of the Lyon family. Series A contains correspondence (1811-1812); a receipt (1839); a bond (1843) for Burr Lyon; and a set of temperance publications bound into a single volume, with his ms. notes at the back (1828-1842). Series B and C consist of the estate records of sisters Eleanor and Eliza Lyon (1898-1900). The papers of Morris Lyon are in Series D, including a diary (1849-1850 and 1856); legal documents, including deeds (1851 and 1866); a letter of administration (1879); leases (1867-1875); correspondence (1898-1901), including a petition to President McKinley concerning war with Cuba and a response from Ebenezer Hill (1898); a historical address about the ministers of the First Congregational Church in Fairfield (1902); catalogs of the Collegiate Institute in New York City (1861-1875); two volumes with the constitution and by-laws and minutes of meetings of the Literary Society at the Collegiate Institute (1866-1867); two copies of the address given at his funeral and memorial resolutions (1906-1907); gift acknowledgements (1871-1872); and math exercise books (1903-1904?). Also contains correspondence of Morris's wife Isabella, including sympathy notes, and a letter from her nephew Leonard concerning his experiences during the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. Series F consists of correspondence and financial records concerning the Greenfield Hill Church (1811-1828); deeds, 1801 and 1810; and receipts (1809-1828) kept by Wakeman Lyon. Thatcher family papers are contained in Sub-group III. Series A contains correspondence of Daniel Thatcher (1838-1868); deeds (1826-1861 and 1878); stock transfers (1838-1860); and power of attorney letters (1838-1856); financial records, including bills, receipts, and promissory note (1845-1866); and accounts with his son George (1838-1861); and plot maps (1832). Eunice Lyon Thatcher's estate records (1891) are in Series B. Assorted materials in Series C include genealogy notes on the Thatcher family; a copy of the 1810 Greenfield tax list; mechanical drawings; a blank petition for women's and men's emancipation; an inventory of a trunk marked "E.S."; a letter to Esther Lyon; a poem; a receipt from Thomas Couch to Titus Freeman, a free black (1819); and a photograph of a man with a dead bear (undated).

The volume of records of the Associated Charities of Glens Falls mainly contain the minutes of monthly business meetings and annual reports. The minutes recorded the mission of the Associated Charities, provided the names of officers and names of donors of financial assistance and goods, as well as the names of families and individuals deemed to be in need. Individual cases are described in some detail. Each year it was the responsibility of the Secretary to prepare a report describing the social problems the Associated Charities encountered: unemployment, tuberculosis, disease, blindness, problems of old age, alcoholism, desertion, nonsupport of families, homelessness, abuse, and neglect of children.

Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Cowles, Florence Ashmore, b. 1846. Diary, 1866-1868.

Title: Diary, 1866-1868.

Entries primarily describe Florence Cowles' family life. Florence was newly-married as the volume opens (the first twenty pages are missing). She often reveals her positive feeling toward her husband. Florence also corresponded with her parents, brother, and sisters on a regular basis. She became quite despondent in 1867 when she realized that she could not visit her family in New Orleans because she could not afford the trip. Florence wrote movingly about a sister who had died young, remarking that when the death occurred she believed that all purpose had been taken from her own life. Florence looked forward to having children of her own and on March 24, 1867, her first child, Will, Jr., was born. Throughout the remainder of the diary, the growth and progress of the boy is recounted. Florence also remarked on the difficulty she had in getting along with her mother-in-law. She described her as a woman in bad humor and highly critical and thought that Will did not realize how unkind his mother could be. On his part, Will believed that his wife was the cause of estrangement between himself and his mother. Florence rarely commented on community activities or events that took place outside her immediate family life.
