This collection contains correspondence of Eliza Mackay Stiles. Correspondents include her mother Mrs. Eliza A. Mackay, her husband William Henry Stiles, the family of her daughter Mary Low, and Mrs. Mary Custis Lee, wife of General Robert E. Lee. There is also a letter from Mrs. Sidney Stiles Elliott to Katherine Mackay Low regarding the family ancestry and relationship to Eliza Mackay Stiles. Also within the collection is a debt made by Joseph Clay (1741-1804) of Savannah, Georgia to Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1825) of Charleston, South Carolina. The original debt is for a little over 7,600 dollars and is dated May 4, 1793. Pinckney also recorded on this document each repayment Clay made. The final payment was dated February 7, 1801.

Habersham family. Habersham family papers, 1712-1842.

The collection consists primarily of manuscript copies of portions of James Habersham's letter books during 1771-1772 when he served as Acting Governor of Georgia. Also included is a manuscript copy of James Habersham's diary dated 1750-1751 and manuscript copies of indentures, letters, and ledgers of John Habersham, Joseph Habersham, Robert Habersham Jr., and Roland Hill compiled in a single letter book. The two letter books of James Habersham's letters contain duplicates. The letter book 2 (August 1771-October 1772) contains the most letters. Habersham's letters are addressed to: Earl of Hillsborough, George Galphin, Capt. James Edward Powell, Lord Charles Greville Montagu, Edward Barnard, William Tryon, John Daniel Hammerer, Joseph Maddock, John Pownall, James Jackson, Francis Williams, John Stuart, Peter Chester, Commissioners of Customs, William Knox, Commissioners for Trade and Plantations, John Moultrie, and Anthony Stokes. Three letters at the end of letter book 2 were written by John Habersham on behalf of his father. Many of James Habersham's letters in this collection were transcribed and published in the Colonial Records of the State of Georgia and Collections of the Georgia Historical Society: The Letters of Hon. James Habersham, 1756-1775. See the collection inventory for publication information and page numbers. Twenty-seven of the forty-nine letters are not published. James Habersham's diary contains entries regarding the arrival of French and German citizens in Georgia, the Rev. John Martin Bolzius, settlement at Ebenezer, Georgia, Trustees appointments, deaths and burials, letter to Capt. David Cutler Braddock, detailed information on cocoons and silk manufacturing, arrival of ships in port, elections, merchants, and mulberry trees. The creator and date of creation of the manuscript copies is unknown. They were likely written during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

The collection consists of two letters of Benjamin Hawkins in 1800 and 1802. The first, on November 9, 1800 from Fort Williamson to David Henley tells of attempts to enlist the Indians against the Spanish and tells of moving Hawkins' residence to Toolcambatchee on the Tallapossa River. The second letter, dated March 21, 1802 from Toolcambatchee to Joseph Clay reports that a conference with the Creeks will be held on May 1st which will be of interest to Georgia and the Indians.

The account book is most likely that of Joseph Clay or James Habersham, Jr., as Joseph Habersham was in England, 1768-1771 and the book is dated 1769 and 1780. The letters are to Joseph Habersham's wife, Isabella, stating he and Mr. Clay will arrive soon to move the women, to Pierce Butler regarding the need to hand Butler over to the Sheriff, from John Habersham with family news and the need to remove Mr. Lange from the Post Office, from Thomas Jefferson offering Habersham the office of Treasurer of the U.S., and to Abraham Baldwin with his reasons for resigning as Postmaster General. The collection also contains a photograph of a silhouette of Joseph Habersham.

This collection consists of an 1800 verdict passed down by the Chatham County Superior Court regarding the confiscation of Basil Cowper's estate and all debts due to him for his Loyalist activities during the Revolutionary War. It states that at the time, he was living in England. A separate record of Cowper's bonds for debt, 1774-1777, recorded in 1803, indicates that Edward Telfair, Joseph Clay, and Anne Cuthbert were indebted to Cowper.

This collection consists of correspondence, a deed, a memo, and a talk given by Edward Telfair. Correspondents include George Walton, James and Thomas Castellaw, Seth John Cuthbert, Joseph Clay, the State of Georgia regarding confiscated estates (1788), James Jackson, Joseph Gibbons, William Few, john Wereat, Nicholas Anciaux, John Y. Noel, and Thomas Usher Pulaski Carlton. Some of the correspondence concerns Telfair's firm Telfair and Co. One letter written by Edward Telfair addresses the purchase of slaves. A letter from George Walton sends condolences on the death of Telfair's son, Edward Telfair, Jr. Thomas Usher Pulaski Carlton writes to Telfair regarding a near riot in Savannah because of the postponement of the execution of two African Americans in 1806. Also included in the collection are a deed from William Candler to Telfair for 500 acres in St. Pauls Parish (Richmond County); a talk given to the Cherokee Nation leaders by Edward Telfair asking that both sides punish their own men for murders; a memo addressed to the Citizens of Georgia regarding the draft for the Georgia Militia per the orders of the President of the United States; rules for ships and vessels arriving in the Savannah River with the intention of unloading cargo; and a broadside of the proceedings and resolutions of citizens of Savannah regarding the attacks of a British squadron on the U.S. frigate Chesapeake in 1807.

This collection consists of correspondence and various documents relating to many notable Georgians and Georgia businesses, such as Howell Cobb, Joseph Clay & Co., Lachlan McIntosh, Joseph Habersham, Joseph Clay, John Macpherson Berrien, Levi Sheftall, and Samuel Elbert. Included in this collection is a list of stations of officer of the Quarter Master's department in Savannah; a letter to Lachlan McIntosh describing the condition and activities of Fort Barrington; A letter from Joseph Habersham to Joseph Clay on the death of Clay's son, James, and commenting on Col. [Benjamin] Hawkins and the Indian situation; correspondence regarding the Georgia Historical Society and the Society of the Cincinnati; a letter from Eliza Logan lamenting the yellow fever epidemic in Savannah; and a number of wood engravings. Originally part of the Tefft Autograph Collection, many of these papers are in the original folders of the Tefft Collection and all of them have numbers from the catalog of the sale, Catalogue of the Entire Collection of Autographs of the Late Mr. I.K. Tefft of Savannah, Ga., Leavitt, Streigh & Co. Auctioneers (N.Y.: 1867). This collection is arranged according to the original catalog numbers.

The papers in this collection include five volumes of Clay's letter books, 1766-1802, four of which were published as Letters of Joseph Clay...1776-1793: Collections of the Georgia Historical Society, volume 8, 1913. There were some omissions in the publication which are marked with parentheses in the originals. Letter book 5, 1785-1802, has not been published. The letter books relate to Clay's business as a merchant and his work as Deputy Paymaster General. There are three folders of letters and miscellaneous papers, 1765-1923, including papers of his son, Joseph Clay, Jr. and his great-great-grandson, William Law Clay. Correspondents include General Nathanael Green, Seaborn Jones, Edward Telfair, Israel Whelan, John Wereat and Jonathon Cochran. The correspondence is arranged chronologically.
