Basil Cowper (d. 1802), a native of Scotland, moved to Georgia around 1760. In 1766, he started the Savannah firm of Cowper and Telfairs with brothers Edward and William Telfair. Cowper represented the District of Action in 1775 as a delegate in the Provincial Congress. From 1776 until 1779, he fought in the Revolutionary War on the side of the United States against the Great Britain. Following the British occupation of Savannah in 1779, he joined the British Army. In 1782, he left the United States. Cowper was banished and his estate confiscated as a result of his Loyalist activities. Cowper died in Jamaica on June 28, 1802.
