Andrew Eliot, and a typescript copy of Eliot's letter to Isaac Smith recounting the Battle of Bunker Hill and discussing the possible closing or relocation of Harvard University due to hostilities.

Title: Andrew Eliot diaries, 1740-1772.

Diaries of Rev. Andrew Eliot, minister of New North Church (Boston, Mass.), kept in interleaved almanacs for the years 1740-52, 1754, 1756, 1758-67, and 1769-72. The line-a-day entries note Eliot's preaching engagements, both in Boston and in neighboring communities, as well as noting other ministers who delivered sermons at the church. The diaries also contain accounts listing Eliot's income and expenses. Sources of income included his salary at the church, weddings performed, wood sold, rent, and interest earned. The expenses are mainly for household items, and for the education of his children. All diaries are kept in Nathaniel Ames almanacs, with an additional diary in a Job Shepard almanac for 1752.

A wide-ranging collection of letters from or to John Andrews, John Eliot, William Barrell, David Ramsay, Samuel Miller, Ezra Stiles, Eliphalet Nott, Cotton Mather, Andrew Eliot, and many others. About one-third of the collection consists of the letters of Bostonian John Andrews to his brother-in-law William Barrell of Philadelphia from 1771 to 1776, with accounts of the growing rebellion against British rule. An account of two Indians written by Susannah Rawson in 1715 is also included.

Title: Papers of Andrew Eliot, 1734-1777

Andrew Eliot (1718-1778) was a respected minister of Boston's New North Church, and member of the Harvard Corporation. He graduated from Harvard with an AB in 1737 and received an AM in 1740. This collection of Eliot's papers consists of two interleaved almanacs from 1734 and 1739, correspondence, an annotated Harvard Triennial Catalogue, and an essay that highlights aspects of Eliot's life from his days as a Harvard undergraduate through his final years as a Boston minister during the Revolutionary War. The papers offer information about the daily life of a Harvard student, and the evolution of Eliot's religious beliefs from an early undated personal essay to his later viewpoints on the role of Providence in the Revolutionary War. In his correspondence, Eliot conveyed information about Harvard, as well as news about the Revolutionary War.

Of note among the eighteenth century material are minutes related to the curriculum, the rules surrounding specific endowed professorships, student disorders, University finances, food service at Harvard, student dress, the effects of the American Revolutionary War on Harvard, and the creation of the Harvard Medical School.

Title: Records related to the charges against and defense made by Nathan Prince, 1740-1742.

In 1742, Nathan Prince (1698-1748) was dismissed from his position as Harvard College Tutor, following several years of controversy surrounding his alleged intemperance, slanderous comments about his colleagues, and other misdeeds. This collection contains records of the complaints and depositions made against Prince, his defense against those accusations, and related correspondence. Ultimately Prince's appeal of the Board of Overseers' decision to dismiss him was refused and he was forced to leave Harvard.

The first diary, for the year 1734, is interleaved in Nathaniel Ames' An Astronomical Diary: or, An Almanack for the Year of our Lord Christ, 1734 ... (Boston, 1734). The entries are brief and sporadic and include mention of the weather, visits to Boston, occassional birth and death notices, and in the later months, church attendance (often to hear Rev. Nathaniel Appleton). Eliot intermittently mentions his studies. The second diary, for the year 1739, is interleaved in an unbound copy of Ames' An astronomical diary, or, An almanack for the year of our Lord Christ, 1739 ... (Boston, 1738). The entries in the second diary are much more regular and focus on Eliot's lecture and sermon attendance. The entries also occassionally mention travel and community news.

Journal kept by missionary Samuel Kirkland from 7 Oct. 1770 - 4 Feb. 1771 by order of the Honorary Board of London Correspondents and sent to secretary of the board Andrew Oliver. Entries describe Kirkland's life and work among the Oneida Indians and neighboring tribes, including discussions with the Indians regarding their spiritual lives, visits paid to members of the community, sermons preached, and the building of the church. Also included are brief accounts by Indians of the "first concern for their souls," and an account of the Indian Schools including the progress being made by the students. Kirkland also details the charges associated with his mission and lists the provisions he distributed to his students including food, clothing, medicine, and cash. Included with the diary is a letter to Rev. Andrew Eliot written August 3, 1772, which describes Kirkland's expenses for the years 1769 and 1770 as he was setting up house in New York. Folder also contains transcripts of the journal and the letter to Eliot.
