Most correspondence in the collection concerns literary matters. The Laura Benét material consists of outgoing letters, writings, and printed ephemera. The correspondents discuss Virginia political issues and Newport News civic issues, particularly regarding the shipyards. Some letters deal with the financial and business aspects of the newspaper publication, and one, n.d., gives a lengthy analysis of Daily Press operations. Major topics include the gubernatorial and U.S. Senate elections, a National Editorial Association trip to New England, race relations, particularly an incident at Hampton College, 1925, and a campaign to repeal the 14th, 15th, and 18th amendments, merchant marine legislation, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, and an alleged interview that discredited Carter Glass. The collection also contains letters and telegrams to Grace Beale Copeland on his death, speeches and addresses on civic, patriotic, and press topics, clippings, photographs, and scrap-books. The latter contain poetry and clippings assembled by Copeland and his first wife Mary A. Copeland, views of Newport News, and scenes of the NEA trip to Virginia. Edna St. Vincent Millay material includes a notebook of Millay's containing original poetry and prose, with notes on publication, written by her or dictated to Eugen Boissevain. Other manuscripts include "Three Songs," with a note by Efrem Zimbalist; "Thanksgiving," "End of Summer," "Ragged Island," "Singing Woman," "Nightingale," and many early, unpublished or untitled poems. With these are poems written in tribute to her by Consuelo Ford, Allan Ross Macdougall, Nora Hefley Mahon, and Agnes Yarnall, and an uncorrected page proof for "Mine the Harvest," and her translation of "Flowers of Evil." Original Edna St. Vincent Millay letters discuss family, readings, travel, finances, health and her nervous breakdown, her literary work, publication, Vassar, acting, an honorary degree from New York University and discrimination against her there, praise for A.D. Ficke and Kay Boyle, criticism of T.S. Eliot.and a Guggenheim for Macdougall. A letter, 1917, from John Masefield compliments her work and offers advice. Letters from Eugen Boissevain discuss Millay's health, family, finances, life at Steepletop, and writing. Printed material includes the baccalaureate hymn "St. Vincent," several published articles and poems, reviews, N.Y. Times obituary. Memorabilia includes pressed autumn leaves from her grave, a knitted doll, a tea towel crocheted by Millay as a girl, a towel and wash cloth, salt cellars, dish and spoon, a purse, and albums of photographs and clippings.

H. Auden, Joseph Ausland, Richard P. Blackmur, Robert Frost, Joseph Hergesheimer, Robert Hillyer, Ezra Pound, and May Sarton. Of interest is a letter to Trigg from Van Vechten explaining how she can have a case of bootleg whiskey shipped to her mother. The collection also contains a signed autograph poem, "Elegy" by George Dillon that belonged to Florence Stearns.
