California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). WorldCat record id: 70980981 Leonora Speyer (1852-1956) was a violinist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a Pulitzer Prize winning poet.
