English poet and naval historian.
English poet and historian.
Sir Henry Newbolt, barrister and poet, was born at Bilston in Staffordshire and educated at Clifton School and Oxford. He published his first novel, "A Fair Death" (1882) anonymously. Two more novels were published followed by success with a book of poetry entitled, "Admirals All and Other Verses" (1897). Newbolt also edited THE MONTHLY REVIEW (1900-1904) in which he first published the poetry of Walter De la Mare.

Scrapbook of letters, writings, and clippings of reviews relating to "The Tripled Crown: A Book of English, Scotch, and Irish Verse for the Age of Six to Sixteen, Chosen and Arranged by Three of That Age." Scrapbook probably compiled by Cannan sisters. Writings comprise two poems entitled "The Tripled Crown," one by the Vice-Chancellor of Magdalen College at the University of Oxford, the other by Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch (published in the book). The earlier letters include fifteen to Henry Newbolt (ca. 1900-1903), with references to illustrations for one of Fry's books, his lectures on art, his illustrations in the Monthly Review, Holman Hunt, Julia Mary (Cartright) Ady, the literary sources of a Signorelli painting, Vincenzo Foppa, and his views on the decline of religion as a vehicle for satisfying man's imaginative needs. A 1901 letter to a Mrs. Holroyd mentions the preparation of tempera pictures for the New Gallery, and a letter of 1905 to Sydney Cockerell concerns a manuscript at Oxford thought to have been illuminated by one of the Limbourg brothers.
