A poetical and prose miscellany with both prose and poetry, with many epitaphs and epigrams, mainly humorous. Leaf 17 is "An Extempore Epigram in praise of Shakespeare." Leaves 68-75 are poems by one Dr. Winter. Leaf 98 is an epitaph on Tobias Smollet attributed to Garrick; leaf 108 a jest of James Quin and Charles Macklin. Written mainly in two hands: (a) title and leaves 1-92, (b) 93-111 --- the last entry dated 1776. Some annotations in the first section are in hand (b); two or more additional hands appear scattered through the 2nd section. Sotheby catalog states that it was said to have "been in the hand of Edward Jones, the Welsh bard, who ... added various poems, etc."

Commenting on the choice of John Coleridge to become editor of The Quarterly Review; discussing how well qualified he believes him to be; saying "that it is possible to be a man of business & of letters at the same time is far from being generally understood, tho few ages have afforded better examples of this union than our own. Our own is indeed a marvellous age in whatever light it be regarded, & a pleasanter one there never can have been to have lived in for one, who like myself, has nothing to do in the world but to learn what has been done in former times, to observe what is going on & to speculate upon what is to come;" saying he has been asked to "undertake a continuation of Smollett's History. But whatever I do must be done at my own time & in my own way; saying The Bishop of Limerick has invited him to visit but that he has told him "I should prefer waiting till the next rebellion were over;" adding that he "wrote an Ode upon the King's [George IV] visit to Ireland which would naturally have concluded with a compliment to Marquess Wellesley; but I saw so little to hope & so much to fear that I had not heart to finish it as it should have finished,--otherwise I should have been glad to publish it."

Manuscript, in Walpole's hand, of a draft, with numerous corrections, of a description and commentary of political events, primarily concerning Parliamentary activities, between 1769 and 1771. Arranged by date, the draft includes descriptions of the reactions to the publication of the Junius letters; Parliamentary discussions concerning the repeal of taxes in America; the activities of John Wilkes, with criticism of his paper, the North Briton; Parliamentary speeches along with descriptions of their effects on their listeners; and summaries of various alliances, maneuvers, and administrative changes within Parliament. Throughout, Walpole includes his own opinions upon the persons and events he describes. The draft is followed by a piece, also in Walpole's hand, titled Journal from the conclusion of the session of Parliament in May 1771, which contains information on the activities of John Wilkes; the deaths and promotions of prominent political figures; and the publication of Smollett's "servile book called Humphrey Clinker."
