Pelham was elected to the House of Commons to represent Seaford in 1717. In 1720, he was appointed treasurer, and in 1721, one of the lords of the treasury. In 1722, he returned to the House of Commons to represent Sussex, a position that he held for the rest of his life. In 1724, he resigned from the treasury and was appointed secretary of war. In 1725, he was appointed a member of the privy council, and in 1730, paymaster of the forces. In 1743, he was appointed lord of the treasury and chancellor of the exchequer.
