Proletarian writer and editor.

Born in a Missouri coal camp, Conroy drew upon his early experiences in factories and mines to write his first novel, The Disinherited (1933). In editing literary and leftist "little magazines" including The Rebel Poet, The Anvil, and The New Anvil, he helped to launch writers like Richard Wright, Erskine Caldwell, and Nelson Algren. Conroy came to Chicago in 1938 to work on the Illinois Writers' Project, where he began a collaboration with Arna Bontemps to produce pioneering works on African American migration, They Seek a City (1945) and Anyplace But Here (1965), as well as several children's works based on folktales.
