Dow was a leading temperance advocate and mayor of Portland (Maine). John A. Rockwell (1803-1861) graduated from Yale in 1862 and served as a Whig Congressman from Conn., 1845-1849. Alfred Rockwell was a Civil War general.

Resident of Portland, Me.; commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers in 1862; taken prisoner during the attack on Port Hudson (27 May, 1863) spending eight months in a prison and at Mobile, Ala. Exchanged for Gen. W.H. Fitzhugh Lee in Mar. 1864.
