Edward Verrall Lucas was an English author and editor. A remarkably prolific writer, he produced novels, poetry, biography, criticism, travel books, and other non-fiction, but is probably best known for his essays, which were wide-ranging, charming, popular, but ultimately lightweight. His ability to be inspired by almost any topic or event and to share his enthusiasm in an entertaining way sustained his career for over forty years, most of it spent on the staff of Punch. He also edited the works of Charles and Mary Lamb.
