Illinois' fourth governor was born in Montgomery County, Penn. and came to Illinois in 1800 with his parents, settling near Kaskaskia. He served in the war of 1812 and then went into law, partnering with his cousin Joseph Beaird. He also speculated in land, making considerable money. He was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court, 1818-1825; served in the Illinois General Assembly, 1827-1830; and was elected governor in 1830 serving at the time of the Black Hawk War. He continued to serve in some elected office off and on until 1855.
