Brooks Adams was an American scholar and historian, brother of Henry Adams. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, into a politically active family, he graduated from Harvard and passed the bar to practice as a lawyer. He travelled substantially, publishing essays and reviews, and a controversial history of Massachusetts. His work and views were characteristically complex and eccentric, and his scholarship often dubious; his outlook was dark, and he questioned the success of democracy and the value of individual wealth. He is remembered for unique and revisionist intellectual views.
