Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges was born on November 30, 1762, in Kent, England. In 1786 he married Elizabeth Byrche and they had three sons and two daughters. After Elizabeth's death in 1796 he married Mary Robinson and they had five sons and five daughters. In 1812 Brydges was elected MP for Maidstone, but was not re-elected in 1818. He was created an English baronet in 1814. Egerton Brydges was a prolific writer. One of Egerton Brydges' accomplishments was the republishing of over thirty rare works of English literature, mostly poetry.

Sir (Samuel) Egerton Brydges, English writer and genealogist. Before experiencing a disappointing lack of success as a poet, he wrote Topographical Miscellanies (1792) and was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. His novels, including Mary De-Clifford (1792) and Arthur Fitz-Albini (1798) were more popular than his poetry had been. He was elected to Parliament in 1812 and moved to Geneva in the early 1820's, where he remained for the rest of his life. Brydges continued to write various kinds of works, including his Impartial Portrait of Lord Byron (1824).
