Leroy Pope Walker was the first Confederate Secretary of War and later Brigadier General. John Beauchamp Jones was the author of "A Rebel War Clerk's Diary" (Philadelphia, 1866), which presented a vivid picture of wartime Richmond. Therein he described seeing Walker in Montgomery on 19 May 1861, and, telling him of his desire for employment, was "installed at once." Less than two weeks later Jones was in Richmond arranging the offices of the entire Confederate government.
