Moren, Edward H. (Edward Hawthorne), 1825-1886.

Hide Profile

Moren was born 1825 Dec. 25 to Daniel and Mary Crawford Moren in Dinwiddie Co., Va. He graduated from a medical college in N.Y. He soon became an asst. surgeon in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War.

After resigning in 1848, he settled as a medical doctor and planter in Bibb Co., Ala., in 1851. In 1860 he married Mary Frances Davidson at Centerville, Ala. During the Civil War he entered the C.S. Army as a surgeon.

Moren's political career in Ala. was varied. He served in the Ala. Senate from 1861-1869, and again from 1884-1885. He was in the Ala. House from 1882-1883, and was Ala. Lt. Governor, 1871-1873.

He was a Mason, maintained close ties with the Agriculture & Mechanical College at Auburn, and served on the board of the University of Ala. and the Ala. Insane Hospital. He died 1886 Mar. 19 at Centerville, Bibb Co., Ala.

Many prominent Ala. political and economic leaders wrote to Moren. Many requests for political endorsements came to Moren also. There is very little, however, on Moren's term as Lieutenant Governor in the collection.

Also of interest are the many letters Moren wrote to his wife. The letters detail life in Montgomery when Moren served in the Ala. Legislature, and many describe legislators or other prominent figures. There are also details of his life as a surgeon during the Civil War. The primary subject in those letters was Moren's affection for his wife.
