The A. J. Emerick collection consists of correspondence referring to Father Emerick's activities as a missionary in Jamaica as well as pastor of the Mission of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Philadelphia. The largest group of lettters in the collection (38) is from Saint Katharine Mary Drexel, foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People. Correspondence from various Blessed Sacrament sisters, especially Mary Francis Xavier, Mary John, and Mary Mercedes, comprises the first five folders of the collection. This correspondence refers to the missionary work of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters as well as Father Emerick's activities. Mother Katharine's correspondence provides a good survey of the work Emerick was doing as he established schools, catechized people, and attempted to establish churches. Mother Katharine gave financial support to some of the work, and it is this work which is most often discussed. Most of the letters refer to the establishment of the Mission of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, plans for a proposed financial agreement between the St. Ignatius Religious and Missionary Society of Pennsylvania and Mother Katharine regarding a church for the mission, and the transfer of the mission to the Holy Ghost Fathers. Although very few of Father Emerick's letters to Mother Katharine are part of this collection, his correspondence to her and commentary on her correspondence will be found in the Woodstock letters, vols. 42 and 43. Additional correspondence from Saint Katharine Drexel may be found in the Rev. John LaFarge, S.J., papers, which are also held in the Georgetown University Special Collections Research Center.
