Alexis Caswell papers, 1824-1877 (bulk 1860-1877).

Consists primarily of correspondence and also includes a commonplace book (1824-1826), lists of library books and classroom instruments, and invitations. The bulk of the material relates to Caswell's work as a faculty member and President of Brown University. Subjects documented in the collection include faculty positions; classroom equipment, especially scientific instruments; the curriculum for physics, natural history, astronomy, and mathematics; and candidates for honorary degrees. Many of the letters are written to Solomon Lincoln.
