Igor Youskevitch was born on March 13, 1912 near Kiev, Ukraine. In 1920, his family fled the Bolshevik Revolution and resettled in the former Yugoslavia. After graduating from high school in 1930, he studied engineering at Belgrade University. There he became involved in Sokol, the Slavic sports and gymnastics organization. David Savelevich Libidins was born in c. 1899in Istanbul (then Constantinople) of Russian parents. He studied voice in Moscow, and after serving in the Russian army in World War I, toured Europe performing with opera companies and in other theatrical shows. In the early 1930's, Libidins took an administrative position with Sol Hurok, handling the U.S. tours of the de Basil Ballet Russe.
