Nineteen volumes of his diary document in detail Utah economics relations of church and state, the inner workings of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve, the widely dispersed interests of the family of George Q. Cannon, and especially the difficulties of living in a polygamous relationship.

Lorenzo Snow was born 3 April 1814 in Mantua, Ohio. After being baptized a member of the Church, he served a mission in Ohio and the Eastern States. He was ordained to the office of Seventy in 1840. He served as President of the United Order in Brigham City from 1874-1886. He was ordained an apostle in 1849, after which he served missions to England and Europe. Francis M. Lyman was born on January 12, 1840, in Illinois. He was married to Rhoda A. Taylor on November 18, 1857, and they had nine children. On October 4, 1869, Lyman married Clara C. Callister.
