Correspondence of Judge Luther Fitch, 1850-1856 (bulk 1853)

The bulk of the collection consists of retained drafts of Luther Fitch's letters to his sons, written in the course of the year 1853: 16 letters to Luther, 13 letters to Edward, and 15 letters to Andrew. The letters inform of the brothers' affairs -- Luther's rather limited successes in California, Edward's effort to establish himself in Chicago and his marriage (of which his father heartily disapproved); and Andrew's search for a job; report on Portland news, including municipal and mayoral elections, "liquor subject," the Whigs and Free Soil Party, plans of establishing a medical school in Portland, local newspapers' coverage of California, emigration from Portland (with "some" going to Australia) and news of Portlanders in California; Canadian and Northern New England railroads (especially the Atlantic & St. Lawrence railroad), land speculation, investments, etc.
