Diary, 1732-1739.

This diary by Moravian Christopher Wigner was begun in 1732 when Wigner, in an intense conflict with a close friend, began to recollect and document his own spiritual development since the age of six. Besides recording daily events, Wigner captured his religious reflections and political ideas throughout the diary. He described his journey from Herrnhut, the estate of Count Zinzendorf where Moravians had been granted asylum, to Pennsylvania where he eventually settled. Once in Pennsylvania, Wigner was preoccupied with finding suitable land to purchase and attending numerous religious meetings. Many of the religious beliefs and customs of the early German settlers, including a baptism by the Anabaptists, are described in the diary. Wigner also made numerous trips to Germantown to receive news and mail. Much of his correspondence, copies of which are included in the diary, was with Count Zinzendorf, who remained in Germany.
