Business papers, 1730-1778.

Includes bills, receipts, accounts, and shipping orders that relate to the ship Tryall (owned by Samuel Powel, Jr. and Clement Plumsted), many of which were addressed to Samuel Bicknell, the ship's captain; letters that pertain to business matters; an invoice book kept by Samuel Powel documenting goods bought in London in 1724 and 1725, including fabrics, needles, thread, shoes, knives, pistols, and a seal for William Plumsted; a daybook kept by Samuel Powel, Jr. from 1735 to 1739 listing a range of products and activities, including lamps, bushels of wheat, paper, gloves, tea, thimbles, spices, knives, supplies for the ship Tryall, painting and glazing a house, surveying land, and monies paid on accounts; a receipt book kept by Samuel Powel, III from 1775 to 1777 that primarily documents amounts paid for such types of labor as days of work "over Schuylkill," mowing, putting up a fence, plastering, and work in the garden; and a few legal documents that record exchanges of property, etc.

Samuel Powel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1738. The son of a prominent Welsh family, Powel is best known for his two terms as Mayor of Philadelphia, from 1775-17761 and from 1789-1790. The office of mayor lay vacant between his two terms; thus, Powel was the last colonial era mayor of Philadelphia, and the first mayor of the city after independence was secured.
