Fifty-six letters and one short note signed by Ammannati or his agents writing in his name document four projects undertaken by Ammannati: the transportation, restoration, and erection of the porphyry column in the Piazza di Santa Trinità€ in Florence, the modification of the Ponte a Mare in Pisa, the remodelling of the Palazzo Pitti, and the completion of the Neptune Fountain in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence.

After working in the Veneto and Rome, the Florentine sculptor and architect Bartolomeo Ammannati was called back to Florence in 1555 to serve Cosimo I de' Medici, Duke of Florence. Cosimo and his son Francesco I employed Ammannati as a designer, engineer, architect and sculptor, entrusting him with the management of large-scale projects.
