Papers, ca. 1872-1926.

Papers, ca. 1872-1926.

The papers consist of original typescripts, corrected proofs, working notes, and occasional correspondence furnishing editorial suggestions and commentary for articles, essays or lectures on Siena Cathedral ("The History of a Pavement", published in 1875); the Italian painters Piero della Francesca, Giotto, and Luca Signorelli; the study of classical art; the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus; Greek myths and legends concerning Penthesilea, Queen of the Amazons, and Demeter; and "The Centaurs". The collection includes a heavily annotated, hand illustrated typescript by W. Thomas Smith entitled "'The Vision' of Lodovico Il Moro" concerning the attribution of a recently discovered painting to Leonardo da Vinci. It is accompanied by a letter from Smith (May 21, 1920) detailing the genesis of his manuscript and asking Colvin to read it. Thirteen miscellaneous letters by Colvin, ca. 1872-1926, with references to an exhibition of etchings by Jean Louis Forain, paintings thought to be by Rembrandt in Munich and Brunswick, and business of the British Museum are also included.
