Large volume containing the daily correspondence and business papers of the Observatory, conducted by Ball and Rambaut (also some loose notes by Rambaut, largely of a later date). It includes in particular designs, specifications, and estimates for new equipment and buildings, and correspondence relating to the same; the chief correspondent is the instrument maker Sir Howard Grubb. Other correspondents include Sir David Gill, George Ellery Hale, Sir William Huggins, John Joly, Isaac Roberts, James Simms, and Henry Wild.

George Ellery Hale was an astrophysicist. He was the organizer and director of the Mount Wilson Observatory of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, 1904-1923, and was honorary director until his death in 1938. Dunsink Observatory was the premier Irish observatory, and seat of the Astronomer Royal of Ireland and the Professor of Astronomy of Dublin University. It is now part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Dublin University. During the period of this document the Astronomer Royal and Professor of Astronomy was Sir Robert Stawell Ball, who was succeeded in 1892 by his assistant Arthur Alcock Rambaut.
