Letter : Franklin County, Illinois, to Dear Parents, 1821 Sep 30.

Holograph letter describing a journey from Pittsburgh to New Orleans and by foot to Illinois. Meetch describes his journey to New Orleans, his disgust with the morals there, his trip on foot to Illinois, during which he finds shelter with blacks, Chickasaw Indians, and fellow travellers, witnesses Indian ceremonies and navigates numerous swamps and creeks. He settles in Illinois, and describes its lands, livestock, and people.

Joseph B. Meetch emigrated from Halifax, Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh, down the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans, and travelling from there to Illinois by foot. Siebert, Frank T. (Frank Thomas), 1912-1998

Frank T. Siebert was a pathologist, self-taught linguist and collector of books on North American Indians and the American frontier. He was dedicated to preserving the Penobscot language and was the compiler of a Penobscot dictionary. Bryant Richard Garrett, the donor of the collection, worked closely with Dr. Siebert and carries on the work of documenting and preserving the Penobscot language.
