Correspondence and family papers. Beginning in 1862, Capt. McConnell served with the Seventh Florida Regiment of the Confederacy, and his letters relate his activities in the western campaigns in the armies of Gen. Kirby Smith and Gen. Bragg. The correspondence also deals with Florida in the years immediately after the Civil War up to 1874.

Attorney and Military Captain. Samuel McConnell was born on January 14, 1834 in Liberty County, Georgia. He was educated in Walthourville, Georgia. He began studying law and was admitted to the Ocala Bar in November of 1860. At this time, McConnell also served as President of the East Florida Seminary. August 27, 1861, McConnell married Miss Mary E. Brumby, daughter of R. T. Brumby. That same year, when the Civil War broke out in 1861, he enlisted and was made a captain....
