Charles Evans Hughes letters, 1878-1943.

Consists of 131 letters written by Hughes, dating from 1878 to 1843. About one-third of the collection consists of letters written while Hughes was a student at Brown University and another third consists of letters written during Hughes's term as Secretary of State. In letters written from Brown University (1878-1881), Hughes describes student life; classes; and professors, including Samuel Stillman Greene. In 1880 and 1881 Hughes also writes his thoughts about choosing a profession; he was considering medicine but his friends encouraged him to choose the legal profession. Letters written by Hughes while he was Secretary of State (1921-1925) document some aspects of U.S. relations with Italy including Robert Underwood Johnson's resignation as U.S. ambassador; the use of American capital in Italian enterprise; and Italian flight licenses. A number of other letters to Robert Underwood Johnson include comments on Johnson's publications and discussions of various political matters. Potawatomi Indian land claims are discussed in a letter to John W. Harreld. Letters to Harry S. New discuss the memorial forest for Thomas R. Marshall; Brooklyn Veterans of Foreign Wars; and refer to various letters of introduction written by Hughes. Twenty letters written while Hughes was Governor of N.Y. include a letter of thanks to W.A. Prendergast for a speech in Hughes's defense; declinations to social and speaking engagements; and comments on various political appointments. There is little information in the collection that reflects Hughes's term as Chief Justice of the U.S.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war".
