Photocopied typescript with corrections in an unidentified hand describing Albert Gallatin Brackett's service in the U. S. Army, Second Cavalry Division in Central, South, and West Texas between 1855 and 1861. Based on and quoting from Brackett's letters to family members, Anderson's work describes Brackett's travel from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, to Fort Mason, near Mason, Texas; his service at Camp Sabinal, Fort Clark near San Antonio, Fort MacIntosh near Laredo, Fort Hudson on the San Pedro River, Camp Ives near Kerrville, and Fort Verde; field service along the Nueces River; skirmishes with Comanches, Lipans and Wacos; serving under Colonel Robert E. Lee during Lee's pursuit of Juan Cortina along the Rio Grande border; the use of camels at Fort Verde; and Brackett's return via steamship to the North with Union loyalists after Texas seceded in 1861. Two pages of endnotes follow the text.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
