Photographs documenting Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. ca. 1866-ca. 1867.

Documenting the end of Maximilian's reign in 1867, the collection contains views of the neighborhood of St. Sébastien, and other streets in Querétaro that were damaged by battle, the Gran Teatro de Iturbide where Maximilian's tribunal court was held, a view of Quert́aro from the Cerro de las Campanas, the hill where Maximilian and his two generals Mejía and Miramón were executed, and their makeshift memorials on the hill. Images of Maximilian's body in an open coffin include a full-length view, a three-quarter view, and an uncut sheet of carte-de-visite head shots. There are also photographs of the shirt and other clothing he was wearing when executed. Also included are a group portrait of his supporters and court officials gathered in Querétaro and another of men associated with his court, and a map showing the military operations of the Republican army in Querétaro.

François Aubert was a French photographer who traveled to Mexico in the 1850s. In 1864 he bought Jules (Julio) Amiel's Mexico City photography studio. For the next several years he photographed Emperor Maximilian and his court and documented the French presence in Mexico.
