Oliver Perry Myers papers, 1872-1933 (bulk 1872-1883)

This collection consists of four holograph diaries kept by Myers from the time he was 15 years old; a copy of a biographical sketch written by Henry Silwold for the Jasper County Bar Association at the time of Myers's death; and a copy of Myers's valedictory address, University and farm, delivered to the class of 1880 at the State University of Iowa. The diary volumes are dated: January 13, 1872-August 10, 1874; November 29, 1874-July 19, 1876; July 20, 1876-July 19, 1878; July 20, 1878-June 23, 1883. The diaries are generally quite descriptive accounts of farming, Baptist Church activities, University life, literary societies, the Iowa Battalion, classes, temperance, politics, religion, etc. The earliest diary includes accounts and recipes for illness cures.

Oliver Myers was born in Washington County, Iowa. He graduated with the distinction of being the class valedictorian from the State University of Iowa in 1880. After graduation he studied law in the offices of Milton Remley of Iowa City and Adams Harrah in Newton, Iowa. He practiced law with Harrah from 1883 until 1895 when he moved to South Dakota.
