Collection includes: a letter to a Miss Kortright (1868 Dec. 1) naming his principal works; two letters to the painter Edward William Cooke (1879 June 23, July 1) regretfully declining invitations to dine; an illustrated letter (1883); a letter (1892 May 8) regarding his painting "Home Light;" two letters to A.B. Cooper of The Sunday Strand (1902 May 13, Sept. 25) the latter explaining his intentions in painting "The Pilgrims First Sabbath in New England;" and an undated note to Edwin Austin Abbey expressing his friendship.

Boughton, George Henry, 1834-1905

Born in England, George Henry Boughton grew up in New York State but returned to England and made his reputation there. Boughton was elected to the Royal Academy of Art and known for his genre scenes of peasant life in Italy and for his illustrations to histories and romances of early New England. E. A. Abbey was a painter. Born in Philadelphia, he was self-taught and initially employed in a wood engraver's shop. In 1872, Abbey began working as an illustrator for Harper's.
