Letters received, ca. 1819-1871.

Collection consists primarily of letters from artists to the comte de Forbin and the artist Cailleux (director and secretary, respectively, of the Musees Royaux), 1819-1849, and to the comte de Nieuwerkerke, (director general of museums and superintendent of Beaux-Arts), 1849-1870. Letters contain appeals for assistance, descriptions of work commissioned or submitted, notes on Old Master paintings and other paintings in the collection, and other business. Writers include Auguste de Chatillon, Louis Jacques Daguerre (concerning his dioramas), Charles Daubigny, Adrien Dauzats, Pierre Jean David d'Angers, Jean Francois Gigoux, Henri Harpignies, Eugene Isabey, A.J. Lorents, Henri Joseph Redoute, Theodore Rousseau, Horace Vernet, and others. Letters are organized alphabetically by correspondent. Included in the collection are one letter by Cailleux; four letters by Nieuwerkerke (1837-1858); two addressed to Leon Gatayes, the art and music critic; and two letters from the comte de Forbin.
