Harry Clifford Asbury, Sr. was born in 1887. He served in the United States Navy from 1908 to 1915, and then was employed by the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company of Boston, Mass. until his retirement in 1952. He was interested in the history of Methodism and in the life and work of Bishop Asbury, and attempted to find what lineal connections there might be between himself and the Bishop. Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Born in England, he came to America in 1771; in 1784 he, with Thomas Coke, was named the head of the Methodist Church in America. There is a statue to his memory in Washington, DC, and in many towns and cities across America one may find an Asbury United Methodist Church.
