Ruth Backes Papers, 1864-2001 (1934-2001).

Backes, Ruth, 1918-; Psychologist, teacher and consultant. Papers consist of correspondence, a journal, notes and drafts, research material, books and other publications, oral history transcripts, and photographs relating to her research for a biography of social reformer and government official Frances Perkins, a 1902 graduate of Mount Holyoke College. Materials in the collection concern both Perkins' personal life and her professional activities, particularly her service as United States Secretary of Labor (1933-1945). Includes copies of letters, articles, speeches and reports written by Perkins concerning labor- related issues and publications relating to Perkins, Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt, United States labor policies, and the New Deal. Oral history transcripts are of interviews that Backes conducted with Allan David Bloom, Alice Hanson Cook, Trude W. Lash, Carol Riegelman Lubin, Maurice F. Neufeld, Peter A. Poole, Richard Strassberg and other individuals who knew Perkins. Also includes an oral history interview of Perkins' daughter, Susanna Coggeshall, correspondence with Perkins' grandson, Tomlin Coggeshall, and documents concerning the Perkins family.
