Letters, 1871-1910.

The collection comprises 22 letters and one calling card. Items of interest include a letter by Carolus-Durand from Brussels informing Neithinger that he has finished the painting of the "Italienne" and wants to send it soon, because he is moving to a new studio, has a new baby, and needs the promised payment (1871 Aug. 7). Asks an anonymous person not to publish the etching made after an "abominable" portrait that does not represent him; he will also notify Claretie about that (1883 June 5). Another letter to the same person thanks him for sending Claretie's work about him. Both letters probably relate to Jules Claretie's Peintres et sculpteurs contemporains, published in 1882-1884. The artist informs a friend that he needs a vacation before starting Louis Pasteur's portrait, and asks him to ask Pasteur to postpone his sitting (1886 July 17). He suggests to Emile Lévi's widow an efficient tactic for persuading the Lille museum to buy her husband's work (1890 Dec. 3). Sends Jules Massenet a telegram asking for a meeting before the composer's departure for Vienna, and reminding him that he counts on his vote for his presentation to the Institut de France (1892 Jan. 8). There are three letters sent to Armand Silvestre in 1893: the artist congratulates him for his wonderful book [Amours folâtres] (Jan. 10); invites him to his studio for a sitting of his "amiable modèle" (Nov. 9); and will send the finished portrait before his departure for the Midi (Dec. 4). The answer to an unidentified correspondent expresses Carolus-Duran's support to the protests against the "vandals" who want to destroy the Marseilles customs canal and parts of the old port (1910 Oct. 4). The artist informs a lady that he obtained a good placement at the Cercle artistique for Tofano's painting (n.d.)
