Helen Hargrave, a 1926 graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, served as Assistant Law Librarian (1930-1939) and Law Librarian (1939-1965) at the Tarlton Law Library, University of Texas, and continued to work part-time for the library from 1965 until her retirement in 1971. Texas State University for Negroes was founded by the Texas Legislature in 1947, in response to the lawsuit of Sweatt v. Painter, challenging racial segregation at the University of Texas School of Law. The legislature created Texas State University for Negroes to provide "separate but equal" education.
