Oral history, 2000

Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum traces her early education in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn to her enrollment as one of eight women in her class at Columbia Law School. She discusses her professional career including clerking for Judge Edward Jordan Dimock of the Southern District of New York, and assisting in the drafting of the legislation for the creation of the state of Alaska in 1959. In 1965 Cedarbaum came to work at MoMA under fellow Columbia classmate Richard Koch, then Counsel and Director of Administration at the Museum. She recounts a number of legal cases in which she was involved regarding copyright at the Museum. Cedarbaum also tells of dealing with the New York privacy statute and the law of defamation, and gifts involving stipulations as they concerned the Museum. She includes anecdotes about former staff members including Richard E. Oldenburg and John Hightower, and discusses relevant events such as the establishment of the union at MoMA.
