Primarily letters fron men who had been associated with him on the California Geological Survey, including James G. Cooper, James T. Gardiner, Josiah Whitney, Vitus Wackenreuder, R.D. Cotter (re mining experiences in Montana) and others; and letters from Samuel P. Langley, Arthur B. Stout, Watson A. Goodyear, and Gideon E. Moore (re petroleum deposits in California and his assay work for Gould and Curry Mines). Also included: drafts of two letters by Brewer re naming of Mt. Whitney; and photocopies of miscellaneous documents re the California Geological Survey.

Brewer went to Yale in 1848 to study soil analysis with J.P. Norton. He left to teach for two years, retuned and got his Ph. D. from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1852. After Yale he went to study in Heidelberg, Munich and Paris. In 1858 he was made professor of chemistry and geology at Washington College in Pennsylvania. Born and educated in New York City, James G. Cooper (1830-1902) was a naturalist and physician with Isaac Stevens' Pacific Railroad Survey expedition of 1853.
