Staff Sergeant Lee Chester Allen was born in Columbus, Ohio, on 9 August 1917. He entered the United States Army on 10 December 1942 and was assigned to D Company, 335th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster for his service in Germany and Belgium.
