Autograph letter signed : Torre del Lago, to Sybil Seligman, 1919 Mar. 16.

This letter to Sybil Seligman, Puccini's longtime confidante, concerns conductor Arturo Toscanini. Puccini describes Toscanini as "il pig de Toscanini," reports that he has heard that the conductor has denigrated his operas to various journalists, successfully inspiring negative reviews, declaring that Toscanini can never be a satisfactory interpreter of his works if he does not himself have a good opinion of them, and expressing his unhappiness that Higgins should hire him for Covent Garden. Puccini points out that he has no need of such "god-like" conductors, since his operas are already successful all over the world, but admits that his contract with Ricordi does not allow him to prevent Higgins from hiring him.
