Forman, Bryan, and Screven families papers, 1797-1901.

The collection is largely family letters and memorabilia of the family of Joseph Bryan, and his wife, Delia (Forman) Bryan. There are some business letters to General Thomas Marsh Forman in the collection. Macfarlane, Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. Of special interest are 7 letters from William Baldwin, the botanist, some of whose letters were published in Reliquae Baldwinanae, ed. by William Darlington (1843; reprinted 1969), to General Forman re plan specimens around St. Mary's, Georgia. The letter of Thomas F. Bryan to his sister, Georgia Hannah Screven, July 22, 1838, tells of the loss of their sister, Virginia Sarah (Bryan) Mackay and her children in the wreck of the steamer, Pulaski. Included are genealogical notes on the Forman and Bryan families and legal documents and a sketch re the Henderson family. The clippings are largely obituaries, tributes of respect, etc., of Colonel John Screven, Judge Thomas Screven and the Reverend Matthew H. Henderson. A few concern other members of the family.

Joseph Bryan (1773-1812) was the son of Jonathan Bryan (1708-1788). Joseph inherited his father's property on Wilmington and Whitemarsh Islands near Savannah, Georgia. Joseph Bryan (1773-1812) of Wilmington Island, Savannah attended Princeton College, New Jersey, and Cambridge University in England. He married Delia Forman (1788-1825) in 1805;she was the daughter of General Thomas Marsh Forman (1758-1845) of Cecil County, Maryland. Bryan was close friends with John Randolph.
