Bound volume containing manuscripts, in the hand of Henry Reed, of three public lectures that he gave in 1838 to 1840: 1. On Sir Walter Scott (beginning: The design of this lecture is to give some illustration of the genius of Walter Scott....; 46 p.), delivered at Musical Fund Hall, 11 Feb. 1840; 2. A lecture on the literary opportunities of men of business, delivered before the Athenian Institute and Mercantile Library of Philadelphia, 3 April 1838 (41 p., including 9 pages of notes at end; this lecture was published in the same year); 3. Plea for culture: mental, moral and physical, delivered before the Pottsville (Pa.) Lyceum, 9 April 1839 (29 p.). The Pottsville lecture includes two newspaper clippings tipped in: one is a review of the lecture (p. 1), and the other is a news item (p. 18) on the death of a boy of about 11 years of age, William Hodge, due to complications of the amputation of his leg following an accident on the job at a coal mine (colliery). The latter article mentions Reed's lecture and says that he had had recently visited the boy and conversed with him on topics related to his occupation.
