Correspondence and other papers re Brooks' service in the Palmetto Regiment during the Mexican War, and items re the aftermath of his altercation with U.S. Senator Charles Sumner. Includes letters of James Hopkins Adams, Whitfield Brooks, Pierce Mason Butler, James Lawrence Orr, and others. Printed chemistry textbook, 1835, with manuscript notations, 1839 and undated, in the hand of P.S. Brooks on a flyleaf at the back of the volume. The notations, which appear to be practice drafts of financial notes, are dated 1 Nov. 1839 and labeled "Form of a 'Due Bill'" and "Form of a Note." Scrapbook, 1836-1933, re newspaper clippings chiefly re P.S. Brooks' career in the Mexican War and in Congress, his altercation with and attack on Sen. Charles Sumner and public reaction; obiturary notices and editorial tributes at the time of his death, information re descendants and genealogy; and printed broadside, 1857, "Arrangements for the Reception of the Remains of Hon.
